How to Make THC Oil for E-Cigs

April 21, 2020

Cannabis vape oil for use with e-cigs and other portable vaporizers are continuously gaining popularity as an alternative to smoking buds. Where can you source THC oil? It is tough to get quality vape juice unless you reside in a state where recreational marijuana is legal. Alternatively, you must possess a medical marijuana card. The commonly available pre-fill cartridges are cheap, but if you have used them before, you can bet the quality is not impressive.

You probably now wondering, what is the solution if you want quality vape oil? The answer is you can make quality THC oils for E-cigs at home. The benefit of making your vape juice is you are sure of the ingredients that constitute your oil and its safety. How do you make THC vape juice for e-cigs and portable vaporizers?

How to Make THC Vape Juice and Oil: Step by Step

As a precaution, the handling of chemical solvents potentially dangerous. Consequently, do not attempt the steps if you lack the right equipment, or you have no confidence in your safety. There are three methods of making vape oil for e-cigs.

  • Long-term extraction
  • Short-term extraction
  • Rosin extraction

The type of extraction will influence the materials you will need. In terms of safety, the rosin wax (solventless extraction) method is safer than the solvent extraction methods. Rosin wax extraction is also cheaper than other methods.

Method 1 – Long-term extraction

Long-term extraction is straightforward but relatively unpopular because it consumes a lot of time.

What you need

  • A mix of Vegetable glycerine (food grade) and propylene glycol
  • Marijuana flowers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Glass jar (with an airtight lid)
  • Cheesecloth
  • Baking tray (an oven-safe bowl will do)
  • Syringe
  • Bottle
  • Stirrer
  • Rice press

The steps

  1. Set the oven at 121 degrees Celsius.
  2. Grind your buds to a coarse texture, but let them remain even.
  3. Spread the ground cannabis evenly on the baking tray and cover them with a foil.
  4. Place the baking tray with the buds in the preheated oven and set them for forty minutes. Once the time elapses, remove the ground buds and allow them to cool. This is the decarboxylation process that converts THCA to THC.
  5. Get your vegetable glycerine and propyl glycol in a mixture of 60:40 PG: VG ratio. Remember, propyl brings out the flavor of the buds.
  6. Place the decarboxylated buds into a jar and add the VG/PG mix until you saturate the buds. Ensure the mixture completely submerge the buds) and stir the mixture.
  7. Cover the jar (airtight cover) and put the jar in a cool dark place for three months. Check the contents after each fortnight during which you should stir and add extra VG/PG mixture.
  8. After three months, retrieve your jar and stir the mixture.
  9. Have the rice press over a jug and line it with several layers of cheesecloth.
  10. Add the mixture into the rice press and cover it with more cheesecloth. Now squeeze to your satisfaction. The mixture will flow into the jug, leaving your THC vape juice. Collect the vape juice with your syringe and fill your e-cig. Enjoy.

Method 2: Short-Term Extraction

This method is similar to the long-term extraction method. However, there is the addition of heat to hasten the process.

What you need

  • Raw cannabis buds
  • Vegetable oil
  • Stovetop
  • Cheesecloth
  • Stirrer
  • Rubber spatula
  • Food grade vegetable glycerine
  • Two pots
  • Water
  • Stovetop

The steps

  1. Using your hands, break the buds and add them into a heat-safe jar.
  2. Add into the jar enough vegetable glycerine to saturate them (do not add excess amounts). Stir the mixture to homogeneity until you have a thick, clumpy mixture that is more viscous.
  3. Add some canola or vegetable oil into a heat-safe pan. You want enough oil in the pan to submerge about two inches of the jar with the contents.
  4. Heat the pan to a consistent temperature of 220 Fahrenheit. Use a thermometer to ensure the temperature is correct.
  5. Heat the jar and its contents on the oil bath and maintain the temperature of the contents of the oil jar at 180 Fahrenheit (use a second thermometer for this). This temperature facilitates the diffusion of THC from the buds into the vegetable glycerine oil. Higher temperatures will break the THC to CBN, which is not good.
  6. When you attain a stable temperature, allow the jar to sit for 45 minutes while you regularly stir the mixture.
  7. After 45 minutes, take out the glass jar and let it cool for a few minutes. Strain the cannabis/vegetable glycerine mixture into a clean jar using a fine mesh strainer.
  8. Use the rubber spatula to squeeze out the liquid from the clumped buds via the filter into the clean jar.
  9. Put the same soaked buds back into the jar and add more vegetable glycerine. You will repeat the process from second to the seventh step for two more runs.
  10. After all three runs, you will further sieve the mixture using cheesecloth. Use the rubber spatula to press out as much liquid as possible.
  11. Now boil the refined liquid in the oil bath for half an hour to decarboxylate THCA to THC.
  12. When correctly done, you will have a clean (debris-free) vegetable glycerine liquid infused with THC oils. Use a syringe to add the vape juice to your cartridge and vape.

Rosin extraction

As mentioned early, Rosin extraction is the quickest and safest way to make to produce vape oil. This method also allows you to regulate the potency of your final product. You use rosin extraction with ready THC concentrates (like BHO wax or shatter) if you lack the tools for pressing your rosin. However, if you have the pressing equipment, then you can start with raw rosins.

What you need

  • Some dry, dense nugs (ground buds will fail)
  • Parchment paper
  • Hair straightener
  • Cartridge syringe for vape pens
  • A glass vial and stirrer
  • Terpene solution
  • Dropper

The steps

  1. Select quality, dense nug with minimal seeds and stems for pressing the rosin. You will need about three grams to produce around 0.4 to 0.6 grams of rosin. You may have to press several separate buds to get sufficient amounts.
  2. Prepare the hair straightener. The ideal temperature for pressing is around 120 to 140 degrees Celsius. Use a thermometer to ascertain the temperature.
  3. Put the nugs onto a good-sized parchment paper and fold over such that you sandwich the nugs between the folds. Center them between the hot plates and squeeze them with all your strength for some seconds. Take care not to burn the nugs. Separate the nugs and allow the rosin paper to cool on the side. If done well, small amounts of resin will stick to the parchment paper.
  4. Repeat above steps until you have enough rosin.
  5. Peel off the THC residue from the parchment paper. Put the parchment paper in your freezer for a minute to allow the rosin to harden quickly. Now use a suitable pick to peel or scrape the rosin from the paper
  6. Drop 1ml of terpene and your collected rosin (about 0.5g) to the glass vial. Use one ml of terpene for every 0.5g of weed wax if you want to make more.
  7. Heat the mixture in the vial by placing it over a hot water bath until the wax blends well with the terpene to form a smooth golden vape oil.
  8. Transfer the oil into your e-cit using a syringe, and you are ready to go.
